ASHP Sterile Compounding Designated Person Competency Training

The Sterile Compounding Designated Person Competency Training aims to advance the expertise of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians serving as an organization’s Designated Person overseeing sterile compounding as required by USP Chapter <797>. Designated Person competency will focus on training and assessing competency of others and on evaluating the state of control of the compounding environment. The educational goal for this program is to offer quality content on topics required for competency of sterile compounding designated persons through interactive instruction and live hands-on competency assessments.

This program is restricted to health-system-based pharmacists and/or pharmacy technicians with sterile compounding responsibilities.

Pricing

The cost of the Sterile Compounding Designated Person Competency Training is $250 in addition to a full meeting registration. Any attendee may attend the live sessions; however, attendees seeking to participate in the training skills assessment on Wednesday and the certificate of completion must select the package at checkout.

If a registrant has completed one of the approved ASHP Certificates (below) the discounted cost will be $200. The approved certificates are:

  • ASHP Compounded Sterile Preparations Certificate for Pharmacists
  • ASHP Practical Training in Compounding Sterile Preparations Certificate

Prerequisites

Any Pharmacy Futures registrant can attend the live educational sessions, however to enroll in the Sterile Compounding Designated Person Competency Training, participants must meet at least one of the following qualifications:

  • Current Board-Certified Sterile Compounding Pharmacist (BCSCP);
  • Current Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT);
  • Completion of the ASHP Compounded Sterile Preparations Certificate for Pharmacists;
  • Completion of the ASHP Practical Training in Compounding Sterile Preparations Certificate; or
  • Completion of a foundational home study course prior to attending the live sessions in Portland. *

* A foundational on-demand course by sterile compounding experts will be provided via your ASHP eLearning account. Registrants will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to access the materials. For those who have not met one of the other prerequisites, completion of this course prior to attending the live sessions is required. For those who have met one of the other prerequisites, completion is optional.

The Sterile Compounding Designated Person Competency Training welcomes pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and others who may be designated by their respective organizations as the individuals responsible and accountable for the performance and operation of sterile compounding facilities and personnel.

Attendees can view ASHP on demand recorded content related to sterile compounding, training adult learners, and assessing competency of others in pharmacy practice in preparation for the competency training. Completion of this course is required prior to attending the live sessions by those that have not met one of the other prerequisites.  For those that have met one of the other prerequisites, completion is optional.   There is no charge for these materials.

The Sterile Compounding Designated Person Competency Training provides 5 hours of sterile compounding related ACPE continuing education for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians for sessions on Tuesday, June 11. ACPE credit is not provided for the Wednesday hands-on assessment.

The designated person competency training participants who have met the pre-requisites for the course, attend the 5 hours of live continuing education, and successfully complete the hands-on assessments on Wednesday, June 12, will receive a certificate of completion to document their competency as a sterile compounding designated person.

ASHP Pharmacy Futures attendees are welcome to attend and receive continuing education credit for the 5 hours of sterile compounding related programming presented on Tuesday, June 11.  Attendees not registered for the Sterile Compounding Designated Person Competency Training will not be able to complete hands-on assessments on Wednesday of the course or receive a certificate of completion for the Sterile Compounding Designated Person Competency Training.
