ASHP Summit on Pharmacy Workforce Transformation in the Age of AI

The ASHP Summit on Pharmacy Workforce Transformation in the Age of AI is designed to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) will reshape the pharmacy workforce and transform the pharmacy enterprise, across clinical, operational, educational, research, and business domains. The Summit will explore how pharmacists and pharmacy technicians deliver care, support decision-making, and contribute to health system performance as AI-enabled technologies become increasingly embedded in pharmacy practice.

Every educational session will connect back to core questions about pharmacy’s evolving role: how work is performed; how responsibilities, skills, and competencies will change; and how to prepare the workforce to adapt and lead. The goal of this Summit is to provide forward-thinking, engaging programming that will culminate with recommendations to prepare the profession for the Age of AI and to champion its responsible and patient-centered implementation. Curated content across key practice settings will provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and vision needed to ensure that AI strengthens the human expertise at the heart of patient care.

The Summit will culminate in a town hall, where attendees are encouraged to share their insights and contribute to shaping the future of pharmacy leadership in the age of AI.

  1. Evaluate pharmacy workforce implications of emerging AI technologies, including how AI will transform the roles, responsibilities, and workflows of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians across diverse practice settings.
  2. Identify actionable strategies for integrating AI into pharmacy operations and clinical practice in ways that enhance medication safety and quality of care.

Summit Spotlight Speaker: Marylyn Ritchie, Ph.D., FACMI 

Dr. Marylyn D. Ritchie is the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer for the MUSC Enterprise, Director of the MUSC AI Center for Health Innovation and Informatics, as well as Associate Dean for Artificial Intelligence and Director of the Division of Computational Health Sciences and Al in the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Ritchie is also the SmartState Endowed Chair in Translational Biomedical Informatics. Dr. Ritchie is an expert in translational bioinformatics, with a focus on developing, applying, and disseminating algorithms, methods, and tools integrating electronic health records (EHR) with genomics. Dr. Ritchie has over 20 years of experience in translational bioinformatics and has authored over 500 publications. Dr. Ritchie was appointed as a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) in 2020. Dr. Ritchie was elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine in 2021.  Dr. Ritchie was a member of the ELAM class of 2022. 

In her new role, Dr. Ritchie is developing the AI strategy across MUSC. She is leading enterprise-wide strategies to harness AI in support of the institution’s tripartite mission of education, research, and patient care. She is focused on building collaborative AI initiatives that connect clinicians, faculty, industry partners, staff, students, and trainees to drive innovation at MUSC.
